Support Services
Student Academic Success
The Office of Student Academic Success provides opportunities for students to grow and develop as they explore all of the academic possibilities that NIU offers. OSAS offers programs and initiatives like Early Alert, Financial Cents, Leaders & Scholars, MAPWorks and MidSemester Check.
Academic Advising
Faculty and staff advisers are available within each college and department to provide students with accurate information on academic programs, policies, procedures and deadlines. Advisers help students select a major, design a program of study, map out a schedule, monitor academic progress and clarify career goals.
The Academic Advising Center advises students as they develop meaningful academic plans compatible with their educational and life goals. The center's academic advising focus is on undecided students, students seeking alternative majors, and students reassessing their current academic situation.
Experiential Learning
The Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning (OSEEL) is dedicated to providing opportunities for undergraduates to engage in hands-on learning. Through OSEEL's undergraduate research, service projects, themed learning communities, and other high impact practices, NIU students will develop critical thinking, use creativity, and employ multiple communication strategies while applying their skills to real-world problems.
Study Skills
Coaching for Academic Success provides assistance with the general study skills students need in a variety of subject areas in order to be academically successful. Students can request a free individual study skills consultation and will receive help with textbook reading, time management, test preparation and note-taking.
