Next Steps after you apply:
Please tell your high school college guidance counselor that you have applied to NIU. They can assist you with ordering your official ACT/SAT test scores and official transcripts in support of your application.
"Accept" your admission offer using MyNIU and reserve your seat in the new Freshman class! You can also verify on MyNIU if all required final admissions documents have been received or if they must be ordered. There is no fee to accept and confirm enrollment plans to reserve your seat to attend NIU.
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions welcomes your acceptance of enrollment plans for the fall 2011 semester, as long as space remains available! Recommend you accept your attendance at NIU as soon as possible, to reserve your place in the fall 2011 freshmen class.
Freshmen must accept enrollment to be invited to a new student orientation and registration program.
#2. Provide Final Admissions Documents
Order Your Final Official High School Transcripts: Your MyNIU admissions status will be updated to Admitted Completeon your MyNIU page after receipt of your final official high school transcripts for final review at NIU. Admitted & Confirmed Freshman students will be considered admitted to NIU for starting enrollment, but incomplete in final status, and considered as Admitted Incomplete status, until their final official high school transcripts, documenting all final grades and the date of high school graduation, is received at NIU Admissions following high school graduation.
Order your Final Official College Transcripts sent to NIU Undergraduate Admissions for evaluation of college credit earned, if you have attended college or taken college courses while in high school.
#3. Set Up Your NIU E-mail Address
Set-up and check your NIU e-mail account frequently for official university correspondence about financial aid, housing, and more. See www.newstudents.niu.edu for details and instructions.
#4. Apply for Financial Aid
March 1, is the annual NIU priority application date for filing for financial aid.
You must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), see www.fafsa.ed.gov. Check your NIU e-mail regarding your Financial Aid FAFSA application status.
Freshman students must apply for scholarships before February 1, of the year they plan to start a Fall semester at NIU. Review Scholarship information at the start of the senior year in high school or earlier!
Residence hall materials will be sent starting in December. You will apply and select a room online. Apply as soon as possible, to enjoy the best availability of options.
All single students classified as freshmen (under 30 semester hours) who will not have reached their 21st birthday by Sept. 1, 2010, and who are not residing with a parent or legal guardian must live in NIU’s residence halls as long as space is available.
All incoming Freshman students must attend a Freshman orientation program and receive academic advising to be eligible to register for classes. You must confirm enrollment in order to be invited to orientation.
Freshman students admitted for summer or fall semester will be scheduled for the summer orientation programs. Orientation programs takes place in April for transfers and in June, July and August for freshmen, transfers and other students. An informational postcard will be sent to students' home address by the Orientation Office when registration for these programs is opened.
Orientation takes place during the preceeding November and December for students admitted for an upcoming Spring term. Orientation takes place in April, May and June for students admitted for an upcoming Summer session.
Visiting students are not required to attend orientation or academic advising, however they may do so if desired. The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences offers Visiting students academic advising appointments.
See Registration/Withdrawal Information for an overview of the Registration & Records Office procedures and requirements. New Freshman students must attend and complete an initial academic advisement during their Freshman Orientation program to be eligible to register for initial classes.
#8. Contact Testing Services

#9. Review Immunization Policy
All students born on or after January 1, 1957 and enrolled in classes at the DeKalb campus are required to provide written evidence of current immune status by the tenth day of the student’s first term of enrollment. (Immunization records can be faxed to 815-753-9599.) See www.niu.edu/healthservices.
#10. Request Disabilities Information
The university provides support services for students with a variety of disabilities. Documentation of the disability and the request for services need to be received in a timely manner.

Information Technology Services (ITS) offers the latest in hi-tech services & support for Information Security, Internet Connections, Computer Labs/SmartClassrooms, Phones, Software, WebServices as well as a Helpdesk Central for your AccountID/Z-ID & Password needs and MyNIU access Help! E-mail, Blackboard, Copy Services and Document Services procedures or advice are also available through the ITS Office.
