NIU Alerts - Text Alert System

Campus Emergency Notification Methods

In the event of an emergency, on-campus students, faculty and staff can be notified through a variety of channels:

  • All students, faculty and staff have university e-mail accounts which are automatically subscribed to all campus-wide messages that warn of emergencies.
  • Text messages can be sent to cell phone subscribers through the NIU Alert System.
  • Broadcast voice mail messages can be sent to landline phones on campus. All faculty and staff are automatically subscribed. Students who live in the residence halls who wish to subscribe should call (815) 752-5900.
  • Emergency warnings are posted on the university homepage at www.niu.edu.
  • Local television and radio stations broadcast information when emergencies occur.
  • All campus buildings are equipped with weather radios to warn campus officials of dangerous weather, and emergency sirens are located on and around campus.
  • For weather emergencies, call the NIU weather hotline at (815) 752-6736 (815-753-9703 TTY).
