Sigma Tau Delta has many awards for qualified student members, faculty sponsors, and chapters. These awards are given annually in the areas of teaching, writing, performance, conference paper presentation, and website construction.

The Central Office sends scholarship awards information to every chapter in September. Forms may be photocopied, obtained from the Central Office, or downloaded from this web page.

Rectangle Awards

Rectangle Awards are given to Society members who have submitted original works in poetry, critical essay, short story, and personal/informal essay, to The Rectangle or the Sigma Tau Delta Reveiw. Winners are announced at the annual convention. The award categories are:

  • Eleanor B. North Poetry Award ($300)
  • Frederic Fadner Critical Essay Award ($300)
  • Herbert L. Hughes Short Story Award ($300)
  • Elizabeth Holtze Best Personal or Informal Essay Award ($300)
  • Judson Q. Owen Best Writing of any Genre Award ($200)

Chapter Awards  

  • Outstanding Chapter Award (due October 30)
    Given to those chapters that have exhibited outstanding motivation, creativity, and service. The awards, which consist of up to $350 and a plaque, are presented annually at the International Convention.
     
  • Outstanding Literary Arts Journal Award (due October 30)
    Literary Arts Journals coordinated and supervised by Sigma Tau Delta chapters (even if they receive funding from other sources) are eligible for a variety of awards of up to $500 each.
     
  • Chapter Website Award (due November 30)
    Chapters may apply for an award for their web pages. Websites will be judged on creativity and usability of design, as well as how well they support or advance purposes and principles (see the Constitution and/or Handbook). Award recipients may receive up to $250.
     
  • Service Awards (due October 30)
    Honoring chapters performing exemplary community service projects and benefitting the agencies served by those chapters. The society will make a limited number of awards, each of which will consist of a plaque for the chapter and a contribution of up to $200 to the agency.
     

Individual Awards

  • Scholarship Application Awards The essays of scholarship applicants qualify for a $100 Application Award.

  • Delta Awards (due October 30)
    Recipients are recognized for outstanding service to Sigma Tau Delta.
     
  • Elaine W. Hughes Outstanding Sponsor Award (due November 30)
    Given annually to recognize a sponsor who gives generously of his or her time, talents, and creativity to a local chapter. Award recipients receive $500.
     
  • P.C. Somerville Awards for Future Teachers (due October 30)
    For Sigma Tau Delta active members who will begin their first year of teaching elementary school, middle school, or high school English by 15 September following the application deadline. Award recipients receive up to $2,000.
     
  • Isabel Sparks President's Awards
    Given for the best presentations by active student members at a Sigma Tau Delta International Convention. The award was established in 1991 by Isabel Sparks, the fifth president of Sigma Tau Delta. Awards are given in five categories: critical essay, creative nonfiction/personal essay, poetry, fiction, and drama/screenplay.
     
  • Scholarly Paper Awards (due October 30)
    Sigma Tau Delta will award $150 each for the best undergraduate and best graduate student scholarly paper presented at a non-Sigma Tau Delta professional conference during the year prior to one month before the application deadline.
     
  • Individual Website Awards (due November 30)
    Members may apply for an award for their personal web pages. Websites will be judged on creativity and usability of design, as well as how well they support or advance purposes and principles (see the Constitution and/or Handbook). Award recipients may receive up to $250.
