NIU College of Law to Dedicate Kenneth C. Chessick Legal Skills Training Center

February 01, 2004

DeKalb -- On March 14, 2004, from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., the College of Law will host an open house for its new Kenneth C. Chessick Legal Skills Training Center.  The Center is housed within the College in Swen Parson Hall.  A brief program will be presented in the Center at 4:00 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served during the open house in the Thurgood Marshall Gallery of the College.

Through a generous contribution by Dr. Chessick (J.D., 1984), the Center incorporates a high-tech Moot Courtroom and Smart Classroom, as well as a deposition room.  The Center will introduce students to today's technology being utilized in the courtroom, technology that they can expect to use frequently in their future legal careers.

The Chessick Center courtroom will be flexible in its format so that it can be used for different courtroom scenarios, including mediation and hearings; it can accommodate up to sixteen students for trial advocacy exercises.

The Smart Classroom will seat a maximum of fifty students at movable tables that are equipped with power and wireless internet connection capability.  It will support real-time distance learning and provide a space for practicing and viewing mediations and depositions.

The College of Law is grateful to Dr. Chessick for providing both the vision and funding for such a wonderful center; past, present, and future students will benefit from this Center for countless years.
