Attorney In The Landmark Gideon V. Wainwright Decision To Be NIU College Of Law Speaker For 2004 Riley Lecture On Professionalism

DeKalb - Northern Illinois University College of Law Dean LeRoy Pernell announces that Bruce R. Jacob, Dean Emeritus and Professor of Law at Stetson University College of Law, will present the 2004 Francis X. Riley Lecture on Professionalism. Professor Jacob will be the eleventh speaker for the annual lecture series. The Lecture will be given on Friday, April 2, 2004 , at 2:00 p.m. in the Francis X. Riley Courtroom at the College of Law in DeKalb.

Professor Jacob represented the state of Florida in the 1963 landmark Gideon v. Wainwright case before the United States Supreme Court. Gideon established the right to free legal counsel for indigent defendants. The current Supreme Court term marks the 40 th anniversary of this historic decision.

Upon leaving the Attorney General’s Office, Professor Jacob engaged in private practice at the law firm now known as Holland & Knight located in Florida. Following the completion of his LL.M. degree at Northwestern University, Professor Jacob joined the faculty of Emory University School of Law, where he established the Legal Assistance for Inmates Program at the Atlanta Penitentiary. In 1969, Professor Jacob again appeared before the United States Supreme Court as a result of being appointed to represent the petitioner in Kaufman v. United States, an important case on prisoner rights.

Professor Jacob has served as Professor and Director of Clinical Programs at The Michael E. Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University, as Dean and Professor of the Mercer School of Law, and as Vice President of Stetson University and Dean of Stetson Univeristy College of Law from 1981 through 1994. He currently serves as Professor of Law at Stetson University College of Law, where he teaches courses in tax and administrative law.

Professor Jacob received a B.A. degree from Florida State University in 1957, J.D. from Stetson University in 1959, LL.M. from Northwestern University in 1965, S.J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1980, and LL.M. (Taxation) from the University of Florida in 1995.

The Francis X. Riley Lecture on Professionalism was established in 1994 to honor Professor emeritus Riley, who has devoted his life to the law and legal education. The lecture series brings distinguished speakers to the Northern Illinois University College of Law to discuss current issues relating to the legal profession.
