The symposium will feature keynote speaker Chief Judge James F. Holderman, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Additional speakers and panelists include: Chief Judge Clark E. Erickson, 21st Judicial Circuit; Lisa Fabiano, Fabiano Law Offices; Paula L. Hannaford-Agor, Director of the Center for Jury Studies; Chief Judge Janet R. The topic, “The Modern American Jury,” was chosen for its staggering importance to the American legal system, along with the increasing amount of discourse relating to its benefits and drawbacks. Emerging issues regarding jury operations and practices to be discussed include the continued use of the jury in our current legal system, the art and science of jury selection, race-based preemptory strikes, ethical considerations, jury nullification, jury reform, statutory regulations which implement jury innovations, and the jury’s rule in punitive damages.
Registration: The symposium fee ($20 Full-time students; $65 Recent NIU Law Alumni – Class of 2005-2007; $110 Other NIU Law Alumni; $130 General Attendees) includes course materials, continental breakfast, lunch, and a reception immediately following the symposium.
