What is the MIDSEMESTER CHECK?

This workshop is designed as a MIDSEMESTER CHECK for the Fall semester to self-evaluate how you are doing and give you tips on how to improve. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

 

  • Are you having trouble getting started this semester?
  • Are you new to NIU this semester and trying to find services or places to get your questions answered?
  • Do you have test anxiety?
  • Are you struggling in your courses?
  • Are you having trouble studying?
  • Do you feel like you are drowning in debt and don't know what to do?
  • Do you feel like there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done?

This workshop series is offered to help students on those topics and many more! The workshop will be help on TWO NIGHTS to give those students who cannot attend the first night the opportunity to participate in the same workshop the second night.

Workshop Sessions Include:

Where Did All of My Time Go?

Feel like there are not enough hours in the day? This session will help break down useful tips and ideas to help students better manage their time and increase their personal productivity.

 

How to Succeed in Large Lectures

Large lecture classes are an unfortunate fact of life. It is easy to feel overwhelmed and unnoticed. This session will give you ideas and strategies for success. Learn how to make these classes meaningful and interesting.

 

Making "Cents" of Your Money

Learn how to set reasonable goals for financial planning. Learn how much credit cards, loans and other debts will end up costing you in the long run. Questions will also be answered to help understand practical methods to managing your money.

 

Enhancing your Study Skills

This session will provide tips on study skills, note-taking, time management, and test taking.

 

Tips to Better Writing

Gain general tips on how to successfully attack writing assignments and projects. This session will also provide information about the types of assistance the University Writing Center has to offer.

 

Making the Most of Your Veteran Experience on Campus

Are you a veteran returning from deployment or transferring from another institution?  This session will help you understand your military and veteran educational benefits and familiarize you with the programs and services offered by the NIU Military Student Services Office. 

 

Success In You: Resources Across Campus

Learn how to be your own self advocate and hear from the Office of Student Academic Success (OSAS) about campus resources available to students. Meet the Student Success Specialists and find out how they can help you navigate your college career.

Managing Test Anxiety

Do you get nervous and flustered before a test or quiz? This session will provide strategies that will help you be successful in your testing and quiz taking to help overcome test anxiety.

 

Major Exploration/Navigating the Academic Calendar

Not quite sure what you want to major in? No problem! The purpose of this session is to provide you with the tools and resources that can help you decide on a major and/or career direction. Also, learn how to maximize your GPA, the advantages and disadvantages of dropping or withdrawing from a class, and key dates each semester that can impact your ability to graduate on time.

 

Apartment Advice

Are you looking to live off-campus next year? Learn from Students' Legal Assistance on how to avoid common mistakes that renters make. Learn how to search for an apartment and how to pick a roommate that best fits your lifestyle. Learn about the laws that are there to protect you, what security deposits are and how to ensure you get yours back. The tenant's Bill of Rights will also be covered.

 

Balancing School While Getting Involved

Many times students focus solely on their academic needs and do not realize that there are several leadership, social and educational opportunities to be involved with outside of the classroom. Here you will hear from NIU students discussing the importance of having a balanced academic and extracurricular schedule.

 

Tips on Managing Stress

Some stress and the desire for good grades can be extremely motivating. However, midterms and finals are a time of increased stress for nearly all students, and excessive stress and anxiety can interfere with your ability to prepare for and do your best work. We cannot guarantee you a successful and stress-free midterm or finals weeks, but attending this presentation will give you ideas and tips to minimize your anxiety and help perform more effectively during midterms and finals weeks.
