Scholarships: Required Materials
Junior, Senior, or Graduate Scholarship
- Statement of Professional Goals and Program of Study. Upload a document in which you briefly (1-2 short paragraphs) state your professional/vocational goals, immediate and long-term. Explain the nature and relevance of your current program of study to your academic and professional goals and the purposes of Sigma Tau Delta (fostering the discipline of English, including literature, language, writing, and literacy).
- Application Essay. You will compose and upload a 200-400 word personal essay, which will be based on the writing prompt for the current application period. Essays longer than 400 words may disqualify your application.
- Unofficial or official copy of your transcript(s).
- Two letters of recommendation. Two recommendations are required from people who know you as a writer or as a scholar.
William C. Johnson Scholarship
- Statement of Professional Goals and Program of Study. Upload a document in which you briefly (1-2 short paragraphs) state your professional/vocational goals, immediate and long-term. Explain the nature and relevance of your current program of study to your academic and professional goals and the purposes of Sigma Tau Delta (fostering the discipline of English, including literature, language, writing, and literacy).

- Sample Paper. Prepare a 2,000-3,000 word version of a critical essay originally submitted for a junior, senior, or graduate class.
- Declaration of Authorship. Upload a brief letter in which you attest to the fact that the critical essay you are submitting for the William C. Johnson scholarship is your own original work and was a paper written for an academic course. Your letter must specify the name and title of the professor, the email address of that professor, the title and number of the course for which you wrote the paper, and the academic term and year in which the paper was written. Providing this information will enable Sigma Tau Delta to verify your authorship of the paper.

Continuing Education Scholarship
- Statement of Professional Goals and Program of Study. Upload a document in which you briefly (1-2 short paragraphs) state your professional/vocational goals, immediate and long-term. Explain the nature and relevance of your current (or proposed) program of study to your academic and professional goals and the purposes of Sigma Tau Delta (fostering the discipline of English, including literature, language, writing, and literacy).
- Explanation of Part-Time Student Status. Explain how this scholarship would benefit you as a part-time student. Your explanation should be no longer than 200 words.
- Application Essay. You will compose and upload a 200-400 word personal essay, which will be based on the writing prompt for the current application period. Essays longer than 400 words may disqualify your application.
- Unofficial or official copy of your transcript(s).
- One letter of recommendation. Your recommender may be the administrator or instructor for the program for which you are seeking funding. Or you may instead request a letter from someone else (such as a current employer or recent professor) who understands the benefits of this continuing education for you.
Study Abroad Scholarship

- Study Abroad Information. A) Provide the name of the study abroad program, mailing address/fax/phone/email address (as available), and dates you will be in residence there. B) Identify the affiliation of the program and provide name and contact information of its director (e.g., your own university/college, or name and mailing address of another institution. C) Provide name and contact information for an official of the study abroad program (the resident director of the program is preferred) who will notify Sigma Tau Delta when you are on-site (so your scholarship can be released).
- Study Abroad Statement. Write a 200-400 word statement in which you explain the nature and the relevance of this program to your academic and professional goals and the purposes of Sigma Tau Delta (fostering the discipline of English, including literature, language, writing, and literacy). Provide program details about the number of terms and dates, courses (titles, descriptions, estimates of meeting frequencies, workload, credit hours), and activities.

Summer Program Scholarship
